The SAC Patency Test,
also known as the Syringing and Probing
Test, is a simple and important diagnostic procedure performed at Chokher Seba Hospital to check whether the
tear drainage system (nasolacrimal duct) is open and functioning properly.
Normally, tears drain from the eyes through small openings in the
eyelids into the tear sac (lacrimal sac) and then flow into the nose through the
nasolacrimal duct. When this system becomes blocked, it can cause excessive
tearing, eye watering, discharge, or repeated infections.
The SAC Patency Test helps
detect:
·
Blockage in the tear
drainage pathway
·
Partial obstruction of the
nasolacrimal duct
·
Causes of chronic tearing
(epiphora)
·
Tear sac infections
(dacryocystitis)
·
Pre-surgical assessment before DCR surgery
How the test is done:
A small amount of sterile saline is gently injected into the tear duct using a
fine cannula. If the saline passes freely into the nose or throat, the passage
is open. If it does not pass or flows back from the eye, it indicates a
blockage.
The procedure is:
·
Quick and safe
·
Performed in the OPD
·
Mildly uncomfortable but
not painful
·
Suitable for adults and
children (including infants)
At Chokher Seba Hospital, the test is
conducted by skilled eye specialists using sterile techniques and modern
instruments to ensure accurate diagnosis and patient comfort. This helps us
determine the right treatment-whether medication, massage techniques for
infants, or surgical procedures like DCR if needed.
